Boudreaux's Lady by Lauren Smith

Boudreaux's Lady: A Boudreaux Universe NovelBoudreaux's Lady: A Boudreaux Universe Novel by Lauren Smith
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I believe that this book is an origin story for the Boudreaux Universe, I haven't read any of these books, but being a fan of Lauren Smith, I wanted to give this one a go. Beauregard Boudreaux (try saying that after you've had a drink) is a confirmed bachelor and rake. He lost his father as a young boy and watched his mother fall apart due to his loss. He avoids love at all costs, or at least he had until he meets Phillipa Wilson.
This is a bit of a rags to riches tale. At birth Phillipa's twin brother died, her father was desperate for an heir and so she was switched with the newborn son of the miller. You do have to suspend belief a little, the idea that the miller and his wife would have been willing to swap babies is a bit silly, but if you can just ignore that, then we're all set up for a good story.
As a young woman, Phillipa is the spitting image of her mother. When her father happens to see her one day, he immediately knows that he must get rid of her before everyone can uncover his secret. With everyone after her, Phillipa finds a saviour in the form of Beau and it's not long before romance begins to build between the two.
There's plenty of romance and excitement in this book. If you're a fan of Lauren Smith's League of Rogues series then I'm sure that you will love the cameo's from the main characters in this book. A bit of a bonus.
Overall this was a great read, I'm sure if you are a fan of the Boudreaux universe, then you'll enjoy this origin story. If like me, you haven't come across the books before, then there's still plenty for you to enjoy here.

No Rest for the Wicked - Lauren Smith

No Rest for the Wicked: Pirates of Britannia Connected World
No Rest for the Wicked by Lauren Smith, pirate with long black hair in front of ship

A wicked pirate, a lady-turned cabin boy and a love reaching the distant horizon.

Your next Pirate Adventure awaits You!

A lady’s guide to surviving aboard a pirate ship:
1) Dress as a cabin boy.
2) Avoid drinking too much rum when the handsome captain is around.
3) Do not let the captain kiss you…again.

The last thing Roberta Harcourt needs is to be trapped on a ship with pirates. After she is separated from her father when their ship is attacked, Roberta finds herself the unwilling guest of sinfully handsome Captain Dominic Grey. He gives her two choices: to share his bed and maintain her life as a lady, or she can sleep on the floor of his cabin and live the life of a cabin boy until he decides to set her free. Refusing to be seduced by a pirate, she dresses in breeches and assumes duties on board his ship among the men, but each night, sharing a cabin with the brooding, seductively intense captain, she begins to wonder if letting him kiss her again might be a rule worth breaking…

Dominic lost his innocence long ago when he was kidnapped and sold into indentured servitude in the West Indies. Determined to leave the painful memories of his past behind, he looks only to the future and the next prize he and his crew can capture on the high seas…until he discovers and captures the feisty daughter of a naval admiral. Protecting her from other pirates and preventing her marriage to an English officer is all in a day’s work for a pirate. But Dominic is determined to play the gentleman he once was born to be. He tries to resist the siren’s call of her sweet lips, especially when she’s arguing with him.

But damned if the woman wasn’t meant to be a pirate because she’s stealing his heart…

My Review

I haven't read many pirate books, it's not something that I usually go for, but I'm always up for a new Lauren Smith book, so I had to give this one a go. We learn from the prologue that although Dominic dreamed of going to sea, it was actually being kidnapped and then abused that set him on the path to being a pirate captain. He has many scars both inside and out which have led to him leading a band of pirates and chasing treasure.

Of course, he isn't all bad and once his men sink a royal navy vessel and take it's most precious cargo, the daughter of an admiral, he soon finds that the man he once was, someone he thought long dead, is really there below the surface.

Roberta is far from being a weak and feeble young woman. She has spent much of her life at sea and she is the perfect match for this damaged pirate captain. I loved reading about this woman who could hold her own in this dangerous world. The romance between Dominic and Roberta is both sweet and passionate.

This was a great read, exciting, entertaining and with a great dose of romance. Exactly what I felt like on a lazy Saturday afternoon.

The Last Wicked Rogue - Lauren Smith

The Last Wicked Rogue

He’s the last Rogue standing, and the wickedest …
The last wicked rogue

Charles Humphrey, the Earl of Lonsdale is infamous for his seductions. With laughing gray eyes and a halo of blond hair, he’s every woman’s wicked dream. Beneath that devil-may-care grin he has a painful past that has made him sure love was not for him, even as the rest of his friends, the members of the League of Rogues, settle down in wedded bliss. When he accidentally rescues a mysterious beauty with eyes as haunted as his own and shares one life-changing kiss with her, she vanishes in the night. Charles vows to find this angel who might yet save his soul but he knows anyone he cares about is in grave danger when an old enemy resurfaces a final time for revenge…

She’s the only woman who can save him…

Lily has secrets, too many secrets. When she’s abducted and taken into the London underworld by a gang of nefarious brutes, she’s rescued by Charles, the one man who can never know her past. She can’t let him discover her feelings or her secrets, but she can’t resist sharing one kiss with him before escaping his passionate embrace. That taste of the last bachelor of the League of Rogues leaves her desiring a future she cannot have - especially when her master demands she prove her loyalty in a most deadly way...

Warning: This book contains a scandalous rogue with a heart of gold, a lady who risks it all to save him, and a league of rogues who value friendship and love above all else.

The Last Wicked Rogue (The League of Rogues Book 9)The Last Wicked Rogue by Lauren Smith
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I've spent the whole day debating how many stars to give this book. It's been hard, not because I didn't enjoy it, I really did, but because I've been waiting for this book for a long time and I think that finally having the 'final' instalment leaves me with mixed feelings.
Charles has long been one of my favourite league members, I had a theory or two about the identity of his lady love, (I'm not going to say more here, but I was right!) This was a good read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. So why the hesitation about how many stars to award? Well, two reasons really. Firstly, my favourite league book is His Wicked Seduction. I love Lucien and Horatia's story, part of me wanted Charles to knock it off its perch and while it was good and came very close, it didn't quite manage it. Secondly, although there is the backstory in all of the previous stories, this being the last in the series, this story arc has to reach a conclusion. Of course, I wanted it too, but it did mean that there was a little less time spent on the romance between Charles and his lady. I loved the storyline that dealt with the League and more particularly Charles' past. I'd wanted to know about this since book one. At the same time though, I wanted more of the build-up of romance with Charles and Lily. That would have ended up being a huge book, so is silly to suggest.
I really enjoyed this book, it's just rather bittersweet as it's the last in the main series. I know that there is more to come with other family members and possibly the next generation, but it is the end of the main League members. I might just have to go back to the beginning and read the whole series once again...

The Darkest Hour - Lauren Smith

The Darkest Hour (The Surrender Series Book 4)The Darkest Hour by Lauren Smith
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I often think about what I'm going to write in these reviews before I start them. I had been going to say that it felt as though I'd been waiting for a long time for Royce's story in the Surrender Series. I thought that it might be worth looking how long it's been, I read the last in the series The Gilded Chain back in November 2015, so very nearly three years ago. It's not only felt like a long time, but it has also been a long time. Some things though, are worth the wait.
I probably should have reread the previous books, to get my head around who is who and how they fit into the storyline. It didn't take long for things to come back to me and I soon remembered who was who. I remember being keen to read Royce's story, as I liked his character and I wasn't disappointed in this book. Royce and Kenzie seemed like the perfect match. The only real question was how they had managed to keep their hands off one another whilst colleagues previously.
The sparks fly in this book, both between our hero and heroine and as they deal with Rusian Fossil smugglers. I don't think I've ever thought about trade in fossils and bones before, but I'm sure if there's money to be made then there will be people who will exploit it. The Russian setting added a bit of a different feel to this book and there was even a little cameo from the lead from another of Lauren's books. (Rurik)
This is a sexy, fast-paced story with lots of action. It's easy to get swept up in the danger than Kenzie and Royce find themselves in. If I were being completely honest, I would have prefered to find out more about what happens between them after they return to America and have to keep their relationship under wraps. It didn't detract from the story really to miss that though.
This book is well worth a read and a great addition to the Surrender series.

His Wicked Secret - Lauren Smith

When a lady decides to become a spy, she must resist all temptation…especially love.

Audrey Sheridan is London’s sweetheart¾a position that allows her access to the ton and all its secrets. As the enigmatic writer, Lady Society, she is wild, reckless, and speaks her mind. She matchmakes wicked rogues with their perfect wives. But there’s one thing she’s failed to find since her debut. A husband for herself. And there’s only one man she’s ever wanted. There’s just one problem…he doesn’t want her. What’s a lady to do to mend her broken heart? Run off to become a spy…

Jonathan St. Laurent is anything but a saint and certainly not husband material. He spent nearly his entire life as a servant to his half-brother the Duke of Essex. He’s trying to play the gentleman now, but it’s damned hard when he’s tempted by the ton’s darling spitfire Audrey. There’s something about her that makes him want to abandon the rules of polite society and show her just how wicked he can be…which is why it’s better to avoid the minx altogether.

When Audrey’s plan to be a spy is discovered, Jonathan knows he must move heaven and earth to protect her while guarding his own secret…

His Wicked Secret (League of Rogues #8)His Wicked Secret by Lauren Smith
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love the League of Rogues series by Lauren Smith and I've been (not so) patiently waiting for the next instalment in the series. We were teased with Her Wicked Longing last year, which was just a little taste of what was to come in His Wicked Secret.
Of all the League members, I have to admit that I was less interested in Jonathan's story. I think that is simply because we know less about him. While he is mentioned in the other books, we see less of his character than some of the other members. I do like Audrey though. She's headstrong, willful and a lot of fun. Fortunately, Jonathan proved himself to be her match.
This was a great read and I really enjoyed it, polishing it off quickly. I will admit though, I'm really hanging out for the last of the main league characters stories. Charles has always been an interesting chap and I have a few theories about who he's going to end up with. But, as I don't want to spoil anything, I'm not going to say what they are here.

Goodreads

 My Review

I've enjoyed the two previous books in the Sins and Scandals series and this was no exception. We met Rowena in the previous novella, where her sister met her match. Now Rowena is alone and looking for love. Quinn MacCauley attracts her from the moment that they meet, but his past loss make him reluctant to give his heart.

This is quite a sweet little story.Which is perfect for a Christmas tale and I enjoyed it a lot. It was quite a quick read, ideal to tuck into on a lazy Christmas afternoon, when you're letting your Christmas dinner settle.

The characters in the story were both believable and likable. The only small thing that I would say, is that at times I couldn't remember when this was set. It is, I believe Edwardian, but in many ways it just seemed to be 'in the past' at some point. That might be more due to me being used to Lauren Smith's regency books, so getting myself confused. Over all this was a really good story and I really enjoyed it.

Excerpt

As much as he wished it weren’t true, he wanted to hold her deep into the night. It was one of the things he had dearly missed as a widower. There was no woman who belonged to him, no woman who he could tuck into his side and sleep with. Surely it would not be a bad thing to let himself have this one little joy in life. We will sleep, nothing more. I hope. Even as he thought this, his mind replayed their wedding night, how wonderful it felt to have her beneath him, to taste her lips, to feel her body grip him tightly as they chased the building waves of pleasure. “Thank you, Quinn.” Rowena was kissing him again and he lost control in a mere instant. He rotated their bodies and pinned her against the wall, his hands exploring her curves, shaping the flare of her hips and the softness of her breasts. She arched into him, nipping at his lips playfully. He loved that about her, how she made him feel young and happy again. Losing Maura had aged him a decade, but being with Rowena, and her teasing kisses and playful nibbles, resurrected the ghosts of his youthful passions. Years of practice had him lifting her up and carrying her to his bedroom. They only bumped into one wall and it was his arm he knocked into the wood paneling. With a little curse at the pain, he finally reached the bed and dropped her onto it. The woman was giggling. Quinn climbed up the bed over her and his clever wife was already working at the buttons on his waistcoat and peeling it off his shoulders. When she reached for his trousers, he gently pushed her hands away so he could get them off faster. Desire fogged his head, and his lips curved into a boyish grin that couldn’t be helped. “You’re so lovely,” he whispered as he bent to kiss her. His hands rucked her skirts up to her thighs and he growled in frustration at all the fabric preventing him from reaching what he needed most. Laughing, Rowena lifted her bottom so he could push the skirts to her waist. He covered one stocking-clad knee with his palm, urging her to part her legs as he tugged at her drawers. There was something wonderfully sinful about taking a woman fully clothed. They shared a moan as he sank into her welcoming heat. She was damned tight, but wet and hot enough to burn him. As he thrust into her deeper, their hips jerked together. She whimpered and threw her head back. Pins scattered as her blond hair broke free of the elaborate coiffure and rippled across the dark blue coverlet. Something inside him, a dark animal side, broke free. He didn’t want to hold back, not any longer. He covered Rowena’s mouth with his, kissing hard, giving her no chance to breathe as he drove into her again and again. He didn’t want to think about how he desired her, about how being with her like this drove him mad with hunger. It was like nothing else he’d ever experienced. When he was inside her, he couldn’t think past his next breath, the next surge back into her body, and how good it felt when she squeezed him with her inner muscles. His heart beat thunderously and boomed against his eardrums. Her palms slid over his body, clawing at the shirt he still wore. They’d not gotten past his trousers and her undergarments. And he didn’t care. He needed more…he needed…Panting, he lifted up off her and rolled her over onto her stomach, raising her dress over her bare bottom. He gripped her hips, repositioned himself, and thrust back into her from behind. Rowena hissed in surprise and dug into the blankets as she stifled a low moan. That never-ending sense of madness and the need to connect to her kept pulsing through him and he rammed into her over and over. He was aware, dimly, of her coming apart beneath him by the sounds of her muffled cries. Quinn didn’t bother to do the same. He came with a shout and an exhalation as his body went limp. Doing his best to not crush her, he collapsed onto the bed and kept her tucked against him. Her bare bottom still rubbed against his groin and he moaned in lethargic pleasure. Rowena was quiet, except for her shallow, quick breaths. His stomach clenched in sudden worry and he leaned over her, cupping her face to turn it toward his. Tears coated her lashes and her eyes were a little red. “Rowena, lass, are you all right?” His voice roughened as his anxiety deepened. He’d hurt her? Been too rough? Bloody barbarian, I am… “I’m fine,” she whispered. “I…well…it was so intense. I didn’t know…” Her cheeks were red as fresh cranberries. “Aye, it can be intense.” He paused, wondering how to explain what they’d experienced. He’d been married and in love before. He knew from experience that sex with someone you loved was overwhelming, not just physically but emotionally. If Rowena was feeling that way now, she was falling in with love with him. He’d known she would fall for him. She was too open, too young and sweet not to fall for her husband. And what truly worried him was how powerful his feelings for her had been, still were… “Have I upset you?” She tried to smile, but her lips quivered. It made something deep inside him stir, like a bird in its nest after winter had passed. It was strange…he had not felt…what it was he could not readily identify. “I’m not upset,” he promised, and against his better judgment he bent his head to hers for a slow, lingering kiss that burned clear through him like shafts of winter sunlight piercing clouds. “I forgot how young you are.” He smiled. Ten years felt like a lifetime between them in moments like this. Her face was still dark with uncertainty and yet he didn’t know what to say to put her at ease.

My Review

As I'm sure you'll already know (or at least if you've read my blog before you will) I'm a bit of a fan of Lauren Smith's books. Grigori is the first in a new series, Brothers of Ash and Fire. I have to admit that supernatural romances, aren't usually my genre of choice, but for an author I like, then I'm happy to give them a go. I actually really enjoyed Grigori, despite it being something different to the books that I usually go for.

One of the things that I really liked about this story, was that although Grigori himself is very strong and dominating, (he is a dragon after all) the female lead in this book is no wilting violet. In fact, it soon becomes clear that not only is she drawn to him in some inexplicable way, but there's more to her past and herself than first meets the eye.

I really enjoyed the first book in this new series and I'm looking forward to reading about Grigori's brothers and their stories. Lauren Smith has created a great world and characters and I'm looking forward to enjoying another story with them.

A Gentleman Never Surrenders - Lauren Smith

It's always a good day when a new Lauren Smith book comes out, which means that today is a good day. Book two in the Sins and Scandals series, a series of romantic novellas set in the Edwardian period, comes out today.

A Gentleman Never Surrenders

Love is worth a little scandal.
Owen Hadley needs a wife. Preferably a wealthy one. Alas, there aren't a great number of heiresses willing to marry a rogue of no particular fortune---luckily, if there is ever a gentleman capable of melting a lady's chilly heart, it's Owen.
Milly has had enough of the marriage mart. If matrimony means giving up her freedom for a foppish husband, then society can take their idea of marital bliss and toss it. But when the ton's most notorious rogue mistakenly makes his way into her bedchambers, Milly finds herself unexpectedly and unwillingly at the altar . . .

Yet the more time she spends with her new husband, the more Milly starts to wonder if the marriage she never wanted may be the best thing that's ever happened to her. Now it's up to Owen to convince Milly that what started as a mistake is anything but---and that every night with him will be more wonderfully scandalous than the last.

My Review

I'm not usually a fan of novellas, I don't think that they give enough time for the characters to develop or a full story to emerge. From time to time though, I'm pleasantly proven wrong and find myself thoroughly enjoying this shorter form. A Gentleman Never Surrenders is one such case. Despite it's short length, it's still a good read and I really enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed seeing the development of both Milly and Owen's characters as they learnt more about one another. To begin with, they each have a few of the other that is in fact, a long way from how they actually are. Neither is the type of person that the other would wish to marry, but it soon becomes apparent that they are perfect for one another.

This was a great read and I really liked both Owen and Milly and the development of their relationship. It was quite a quick read, but that was in part due to the fact that once I started, I just couldn't put it down. Recommended.

Underneath the glitter of this fairy tale romance, Felicity and Jared might have found true love. But the mounting pressure of their real lives takes hold again and Jared and Felicity are pulled further and further apart. Can they find their fairy tale ending or will they be left with the dying embers of what could have been?

My Review

I'm always happy when there is a new Lauren Smith book out, as you probably know, I'm a big fan of her work. Getting my hands on a copy of Legally Charming before it came out, so that I could review it, was fantastic. This is a new contemporary romance and the first in the Ever After series.

This is a lovely story and a nice, quick read. Our hero, Jared isn't sure that he has time for romance, but once he meets Felicity, he soon changes his mind and decides that she's for him. She isn't quite so sure, she's drawn to Jared and finds herself falling for him. With the end of her university course rapidly approaching and her plans to move for her job, Felicity isn't sure that they can have a future together.

The only slight issue I had with this story, was Felicity. She appears to be much younger than she actually is at times and the way that she deals with thing seems a little silly and unfair. I'd have liked to shake her.

This is  great read and I'd recommend it.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on an advance copy of her newest story, The Rakehell's Seduction.

Title: The Rakehell’s Seduction
Series: Seduction #2

HE’S MADE A DANGEROUS WAGER

Ambrose Worthing is no gentleman. He’s a proud cold-hearted rake who’s determined to stay a bachelor forever. He enjoys bedding a different woman every night without the risk of falling in love. When he hears about a wager over the seduction and ruination of the daughter of his father’s best friend, he knows he must intervene. Committing himself to the bet, he agrees to seduce Lady Alexandra Rockford—for her own good. He never expected the lady in question to be a beautiful, fiery creature who has passions of her own that call to his guarded heart.

SHE’S VOWED NEVER TO FALL IN LOVE AGAIN

Alexandra Rockford has sworn off men, her heart still broken from the false promises of a childhood sweetheart who left her to marry an heiress. When she stumbles into Ambrose outside of a country ball, she knows the rake his trouble. His smile, his touch, his forbidden kiss are all too tempting but being with him would ruin her. Determined to enjoy herself without falling in love, Alex can’t help but let her defenses down with the too charming rake. But when she discovers Ambrose is seducing her to win a bet, it will take everything Ambrose has to prove to her that he is worthy to love her.

My Review

As I already mentioned, I love Lauren Smith's writing. Whether it's her contemporary books, something a little bit supernatural, or her Regency work. I first discovered her work through her League of Rogues books. Although the Rakehell's Seduction is from a different series, it is from the same era, and for fans of the LofR, there's even a little bit of a cross over in this one.

When Ambrose meets Alexandra, he soon discovers that he's met his match. She doesn't fall for his smooth charm instantly and he soon realises that seducing this young lady might not be as straightforward as he first thought. He had thought that a young woman who avoids the marriage mart in London might not have that much in the way of charm. But he soon discovers that he was wrong.

Alexandra has heard of Ambrose's reputation, she knows that he's not the kind of man that she want's to get mixed up with. He's surely not the kind of man to trust her already once damaged heart with.

I do enjoy a good bad boy novel and this certainly was one of those. Although Ambrose starts out with the intention of just seducing the lady for her own good, he soon finds that these things never quite go to plan. I really enjoyed this great read, polishing it off in a day. Another great book from Ms Smith.

Excerpt

Ambrose Worthing was attending a country dance.

The notion was laughable. He, a glorified rakehell with a distaste for country life, was currently entrapped in a bloody assembly room that could pass for a barn on better days. In fact, as he glanced around the room, he decided it most certainly resembled a farmyard at the moment, with the gaggle of society mamas squawking like geese, their turbans festooned with tall ostrich plumes.

He groaned when he saw them scrutinizing him, whispering behind their fans, their eyes dancing over his form as they assessed his marital suitability. From the clever smiles he glimpsed, he knew they were ready to throw their innocent daughters at his feet.

Like bloody hell. He was not about to find himself accidentally “compromising” any of the young ladies here tonight. He’d come here tonight to find one particular young woman to seduce her, to win a bet he’d made in London the previous week, and hopefully save her. He was not about to let the gathering of society mamas intimidate him into dancing with their daughters, even if they rivaled the great ancient Mongolian Golden Horde led by Genghis Khan. Many a rake had fallen under their wiles, surfacing months later to find themselves stuck with a shy chit of a girl as a wife and an obnoxious mother-in-law.

At twenty-nine years old, he’d managed to weather many attempts by his friends and relatives to see him settled. If those who loved him could not bring him to the altar, no silly chits from the country would have any success either. He was a permanent bachelor, and he liked it. Marriage was not made for men like him. To be tied down with one woman for the rest of his life and suffer the trappings of home and hearth when he could be exploring the world and living? Heavens no, he would not give up his freedom for anything.

A few daring matchmaking mamas separated from the crowd and walked in his direction. Damnation, even the need for a master of ceremonies to perform introductions wouldn’t stop these women.

Ambrose spun on his heel, desperate to avoid conversation. If he had to listen to one more story about how well their daughters played the pianofortes or how accomplished they were at needlepoint, he’d run from the assembly hall screaming.

He had met almost everyone present at the dance and had no desire to continue any of the acquaintances. He was only here because of the wager placed in a betting book at White’s. A damned fool named Gerald Langley had put down in the books that anyone who plucked the fruit of this girl’s vine would receive five thousand pounds from him. Langley was a brute with little in the way of good sense and far too much coin. Ambrose had no idea why Langley had it in for the Earl of Rockford’s daughter, but he did. After reading the bet, Ambrose had penned his name to the challenge and notified Langley he had accepted the wager.

For once in his life he was trying to do the right thing by a woman. It was a bit ironic, though, that saving the woman required compromising her. But the Earl of Rockford and his father had been friends, and Ambrose felt he owed it to Rockford to win the wager and keep the lady safe from true scoundrels. No other man would take the care with her that he would and see to it that her first time with a man was a pleasurable experience.

He had one month to seduce Rockford’s daughter and provide proof of this seduction in London. As the lady in question had never been to London, there was much speculation among the men at his club whether she was a diamond of the first water or a dowdy creature. The betting book listed her age as twenty-two, young enough not to be an ape leader, a nasty term for women nearing spinsterhood.

Apparently Rockford wasn’t one for traditions. Any father wishing to ensure his daughter’s future would have brought her to London at seventeen or eighteen, had her presented to the queen, and then made the round of balls to hunt for a husband.

Yet Rockford had not done any of that. He’d kept his daughter in the country, living a quiet life. An unplucked fruit to tempt the worst sort of men in White’s to bet upon the taking of her maidenhead for their own amusement.

Normally Ambrose had little desire to compete in wagers, especially ones which involved the corruption of innocents. It was not out of some moral principle, but rather a dislike of virgins. They tended to fall in love and cling to the man who took their innocence. But after witnessing the sort of men discussing whether to take the bet that night, Ambrose decided he would do this innocent lady a favor. He’d penned his name in the books, taking up the wager, and sent a letter to Rockford, renewing their acquaintance.

A letter from Rockford arrived only a few days later, inviting Ambrose to this ball and to spend a few weeks at Rockford’s home as a guest. It was the perfect opportunity for Ambrose to cozy up to the man’s daughter and see what sort of creature he would soon be bedding.

If only he knew what the lady looked like. In the chaotic din full of dancing and music, he could not find a single young lady among the crush that he was willing to bed. It wasn’t that the young ladies weren’t attractive. They were, but none were to his taste. Innocent young ladies had never appealed to him. If his friend Gareth Fairfax had been there, Gareth would have been laughing at him. Gareth was stuck in his own hell—the poor fool was happily married. Married! Ambrose couldn’t think of anything more terrifying than being stuck with one woman for the rest of his life. Helen was a darling creature and perfectly suited to Gareth, and Ambrose supposed it would be not too terrible to share a bed with a woman like her. But still, to be leg-shackled?

I would rather die in a thousand unspeakable ways than stand in a bloody church and tie myself to one woman for the rest of my days.
