Grave-Reaping Hermit - Everlyn C. Thompson

When self-professed hermit Theodora Edwards is attacked by a dark fae and infected with his magic, she finds herself thrust into the supernatural spotlight as the first possible changeling in centuries. As if surviving the transition isn’t hard enough, Theo has to deal with an attempted abduction by her newly turned vampire ex-husband, unwanted courting offers from salacious fae suitors, and her growing attraction to the guardian of the gate to Fairie.

Caught in a cruel tug-of-war between the queen of the fae and a surly law-enforcement agent, Theo must find a way to free herself before she loses her hard-earned independence for good.

Book one in the Grave Reaper Series.

My Review

Grave-Reaping Hermit is the first book in the Grave Reaper series. I wasn't really sure what to expect with this book, but once I started I was hooked. Theo, our heroine has no idea about fae, vampires or any other paranormal beings. She suddenly finds herself right in the middle of that world, after being attacked by a dark fae.
Theo is a fantastic and really relatable character. I'm not entirely sure how I might react when faced with anything like this, but there's something really human and real about her. I also loved the other characters that appear, from the dog that appears looking for food, to the various paranormal characters that find their way into Theo's life.
I also really loved the humor in this book. Right from the very first line, there are some really funny moments in this book.
This is the first book of three, I'm desperate to know what happens next and I'm so pleased that we're not leaving this world behind just yet. I loved this story and I can't wait to read the next in the series.

My Review

Excerpt

Max walked toward me, thumb hooked under the shoulder strap of his bag, and smiled. Clearly, he aces the masculinity test with no preparation at all. He tilted his head, like he was thinking over something. Obviously, he had no idea he could ask me anything, and I’d say yes. Readily. Breathlessly.

“So,” he said, dragging out the word, “about dinner tonight—”

“Oh, I got it,” I said, waking up my phone. “Sofia texted me everything. Reservations downstairs at seven o’clock.” From the look of his furrowed brow, I wondered if I had a fleck of apple skin stuck between my teeth from my mid-flight snack.

“Yeah…there’s been a slight change of plans. You and Ethan were having dinner downstairs. I have something else planned for us.”

Us. The word sounded dreamy coming from his mouth, floating through the air like a kite in springtime. My toes curled inside my sandals.

“That text,” he said, gaze flickering to his phone, “was from one of my best friends from college. We’re meeting him and his wife for supper. I don’t know what the hell got into Ethan.” He rubbed his knuckles under his chin. “You can’t come to the coast and eat hotel food. Even this hotel’s food.”

I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. “No, of course not.”

“We’re meeting Jack and Leigh at Thibodeaux’s at eight.”

Thibodeaux’s. The name twirled through my thoughts.

Max leaned a shoulder on the wall, and our gazes met. “It’s this fantastic urban grill—gorgeous waterfront views—fresh catch served daily. Exceptional food and service—”

 As exceptional as you…?

 “—so, how’s that sound?”

My heart skipped a pair of beats, then I relaxed into my natural Goldie grin. “Sounds wonderful.”

No Good Deed - C.D.Bennett

No Good Deed…goes unpunished.

Kiya James’ relocation to idyllic Riverton Colorado is disrupted when she discovers a critically wounded man lying in a field near her home. Little did she know that her selfless act to save the man’s life would thrust her into a world of corruption, greed, and danger. As the only witness to the initial attack, and shaken by an attempt on her own life, Kiya is offered refuge with the victim’s family. Together, they struggle to uncover the circumstances that would trigger an unknown assailant to unleash a string of deadly attacks in an otherwise quiet rural ranching community.

Jake McCleary’s world could have been destroyed with a single bullet if it hadn’t been for the quick actions of a stranger. Now, in a desperate attempt to protect her, and his entire family, Jake must fight to defend his home, livelihood, and the woman who was rapidly capturing his heart, against the vicious actions of a criminal that will stop at absolutely nothing to get what he wants. But will they find the answers they need in time, or will they lose everything to the conceit of a madman? And will the bond between his wounded brother and the woman that saved him prove to be too big of an obstacle for Jake to overcome in the pursuit for Kiya’s love?

My Review

No Good Deed is an unusual (and yet entertaining) read. It's not quite suspense and not quite romance, although it has plenty of both of these.
The story follows Kiya, a young woman who has recently rented and moved to a farmhouse. She first meets her neighbours when she witnesses one of them being shot and jumps to his aid, saving his life with her first aid skills. She then finds herself drawn into the danger that seems to be stalking this family. In the process she finds herself drawn to one of the brothers.
There's so much going on here and it really is a thrilling ride. Not only is there action, adventure and danger on nearly every page, but were treated to two budding romances. What more could you want?
If there was something that I didn't enjoy so much, it was the sudden shift in point of view. I do enjoy books told from multiple POVs, but these changed mid-chapter and flow with no warning. At times it threw me as to who was thinking this, although it was usually cleared up quickly.
This was a very entertaining and thrilling read. Definitely one to check out.

Corpse in the Craftsman Cottage - Lori Pollard-Johnson

Corpse in the Craftsman Cottage

Thirty-four, newly divorced and parenting two little girls, Jan Weatherly is determined to make it on her own doing what she knows do-it-yourself home flipping. With her BFF Pam Bacchus by her side, she purchases their first fixer-upper—a cute Craftsman cottage with quick profit potential in rainy Rainier, Washington. With the first swing of her claw hammer, however, Jan pries back faux cedar panelling and reveals a nude, snow-haired corpse floating in a makeshift aquarium. If that didn’t fully sour their dreams in a plume of formaldehyde-tinged air, Sergeant Daniels arrives and bans the women from the crime scene. Will they continue sleuthing, despite Daniels’s warnings, or simply wait for their dreams of financial independence to fall apart?

My Review

It seems to be slightly crazy to suggest that a murder mystery, or indeed any story with a dead body as a major plot point, could not only be entertaining but also almost comfortable. But some books are just like finally getting to sit down after a long day at work. Corpse in the Craftsman Cottage is one such book. I've never read it before, in fact, this is my first book by this author, but there was something just so familiar and comforting about it.

Jan and Pam are best friends who have both been cheated on by their husbands and are now trying to make their way in the world. Things would be going well, with a house to renovate and the skills to do it, if it weren't for the discovery of a body behind the wall.

I loved both the mystery side of this book and the friendship between the two women. I'm not sure what either of them saw in their ex-husbands, but I can see why they are friends. There's also the hint of a future romance in this book, which just added to the whole mix for me.

I didn't completely solve the mystery this time, but that doesn't matter. For me it's more about the story than proving how clever I am! This was a great read and I'd love to read more from Jan and Pam.

I'm a storyteller at heart. After retiring from teaching reluctant and eager readers and writers, elementary school-age through college, I've refocused my energy and am spinning yarns once again. I have two novels slated for publication in 2024 through The Wild Rose Press: "Corpse in the Craftsman Cottage," a cozy mystery with a female amateur sleuth duo and a backdrop of home flipping; and "Toxic Torte," a cozy culinary featuring a sassy young newspaper reporter investigating the murder of a caustic restaurant critic. I also have two mid-grade readers available through Perfection Learning Corporation: "The Truth Test" and "Recipe for a Rebel," and an edgy, Indie-published YA, "The Lie." Additionally, I have over 100 publishing credits in short fiction, nonfiction and poetry, in publications as diverse as Vegetarian Journal, Seattle, Black Belt, NW Palate, Palm Springs Life, Bridal Connections and The Binnacle. I recently took first place in short fiction for "What It Takes to Scare a Man," and poetry for "Hope is a Three-Toed Dragon" in a southern California writing contest. I earned an MA in Writing Popular Fiction at Seton Hill University and had the pleasure of learning from some of the best, most creative writers in the business. In my spare time, I braid rugs from upcycled materials, watch the javelinas dance through my back yard, hike with my husband, and swim with my beautiful grandchildren.

This Wicked City - Michael Walsh

This Wicked City

Crime and corruption are rising in Ocean Park, a tired factory town in northern Massachusetts. The police and fire departments are no help-they're staging a work slowdown to protest a pay freeze caused by city budget cuts. Police Detective Matt Conley is disgusted with the dereliction of duty, and when tasked with solving the murder of a young Haitian immigrant, he infuriates the force by teaming with the victim's friend Emmanuel to find the killer. They encounter an enterprising family of Voudou worshipers, a ruthless real estate magnate, and a clever, love-struck arsonist in their search for justice. This Wicked City is a mystery powered by its characters' struggles with love, loyalty, and sacrifice.

My review

This Wicked City is the first book by Michael Walsh that I've read. I do enjoy crime novels, but it's quite a long time since I've read this type of gritty us police story. This is not the first novel in the series, but it didn't matter. There were small references that might have been talking about previous books, but I don't think that it detracted from my enjoyment by not having read them before.
In this story, Detective Matt Conoley has to navigate the intricacies of Haitian immigrant life, voudou and fellow officers who are corrupt or uninterested in doing a good job. There was so much going on in this book, I did at times, find that I was getting a bit lost in it all, but it was an interesting read all the same.
I had no idea who was behind it all or why, but I wanted to keep turning the pages and finding out just what was going to happen. I did find that the ending was a little rushed, it seemed to jump quickly forward in time, but I think that was probably needed in order to help tie everything up a bit.
Overall an entertaining read that was a little different to my usual choices.

Michael Walsh

Jacksonville, Florida — Florida mystery writer Michael Walsh recently released his novel This Wicked City, the third installment of the Ocean Park mystery series. His previous books, Ocean Park and Gypsy, have garnered over 100 five-star reviews on Amazon. The Boston Herald calls the series “Great read, real page turners!” and Amazon’s official reviewer The Vine Voice says Ocean Park is “for mystery fans who value originality and talent”.

Walsh attended Massachusetts schools before earning a degree in journalism from Boston University. Set on Massachusetts’ North Shore in the fictional city of Ocean Park, the mystery series is inspired by Bay State stories, trends, and landmarks. This Wicked City is a fast-paced literary mystery with a star-crossed protagonist and a compelling plot. When Haitian immigrant Joseph Denard is murdered, Ocean Park Police Detective Matthew Conley infuriates the force by teaming with Joseph's friend Emmanuel Hillaire to solve the case. They encounter an enterprising family of Voudou worshipers, a ruthless real estate magnate, and a clever, love-struck arsonist in their search for justice. This Wicked City is powered by its characters' struggles with love, loyalty, and sacrifice. Mystery and suspense junkies will revel in this whodunit that lights the powder kegs of immigration, clashing cultures, and integration.

Sunset Ledge - Darlene Deluca

Can a seasoned traveller from the city thaw the numb heart of a reclusive Texas widower?

Book Description:

Jack Armstrong lives like a recluse on his Texas ranch. In the difficult years after his wife’s death, he goes through the motions of life and wants to be left alone.

Caroline Tate, a widowed ecology professor, arrives at the ranch for a much-needed break and to take nature photos for her sabbatical project. But relaxing is a challenge when she finds herself at odds with the curmudgeonly cowboy who owns the place.

Jack generally steers clear of the guests, but this time, it’s not so easy. Vivacious Caroline doesn’t fade into the background. This city gal comes with pearls around her neck, a big red flower on her floppy hat, and way too many questions. Her self-assured, adventurous spirit gets under Jack’s skin, and she soon stirs feelings long dormant inside him.

My Review:

So many romance novels involve couples that are fairly young and new to relationships and love. Even characters who have been hurt in the past are generally in their 30s at their very oldest. Sunset Ledge is a little different, it tells the story of Jack and Caroline, both of whom have been happily married for many years, but then lost their partners and have been left as widow and widower respectively. Now, alone, but not looking for love, something slowly develops between them when they meet.

I enjoyed this later-in-life romance. I loved seeing Jack slowly almost come back to life as Caroline woke him up to the possibilities of life after losing your long-term love.

I loved reading about the setting for this book too. I've always known that ranches in Texas were both big and potentially dangerous, but I think this story brought that to life. The idea that you might have to drive between different buildings on the ranch (the house, the cabins and the barn) rather than just walk surprised me.

There is, as is often the case in this genre of book, a point of conflict that nearly drives this couple apart. I don't want to spoil what it is, or how the characters dealt with it here. I'm not sure that I would have been able to accept it.

It was such a refreshing change having characters who were that bit older and had lived more of life than you often see. I'm all for later-in-life romances if they are like this one, although I think you might have to go quite a long way to find one that comes close. A highly recommended read.

Book Excerpt:

Jack spotted the car first. But as the road curved around the creek, he saw the woman. He watched as she set up a tripod then pulled a bag from her car. No equipment, huh?

She tossed off the hat she’d worn the day they’d met and moved up to the camera, hair blowing around her.

He signaled Charlie, his trusted Appaloosa, to move forward. As far as Jack could tell, she was taking pictures of rocks. He didn’t much care what she was doing, but he wanted her to know he saw her and all the stuff she had strewn about.

As they approached, she turned, shading her eyes with her hand.

Jack tipped his hat. “Afternoon, ma’am. I understood you weren’t bringing equipment.”

“Good afternoon, Jack. It’s Caroline. Do you mean the tripod?”

What else would he mean? He nodded toward her set-up.

“I understood you didn’t want a crew of people and video equipment. All I have is a single tripod for a single camera used by a single person. It helps steady my hand.” She held up a hand and added with a light laugh, “I prefer my pictures to be in focus.” She gestured toward the rock. “These little guys move so fast.”

Jack squinted. “What guys?”

“I’ve got three or four lizards running around here.”

“Ah.” Jack adjusted on the horse, feeling a bit foolish. Probably best to move on and leave her to it.

“I got a great shot of a rattler a while ago.”

Alarm pulsed through him. “You did? A rattlesnake here on the ranch?”

“Yes. It was amazing, but a little…rattling. Pun intended.”

She let out that soft chuckle again.

“I admit it gave me a scare for a minute, but after a short standoff, we gave each other our space and went our separate ways. Want to see?”

She fiddled with the camera a moment, and Jack was compelled to swing down from the horse. He did want to see.

When she held it toward him, he peered into the back of her camera, and found the cold-blooded face of a rattlesnake staring at him at close range. His heart bounced. He turned his gaze back to the woman beside him—and wondered if the ranch had adequate insurance to keep her on the property.

She’d captured one hell of a shot. The snake, obviously alerted to her presence, sat tensed, partially hidden beneath a rock, but its rattle erect and sending the telltale warning to the intruder.

“What do you think?” Caroline asked.

Jack shook his head. He couldn’t say what he really thought in the presence of a lady. He blew out his breath. “Caroline, we try to keep our guests out of harm’s way on the ranch and would appreciate it if you’d help us out in that regard by not doing something foolish. How close were you?”

The hand she placed on his arm sent unexpected—and unwelcome—jolts of heat through Jack.

“Don’t worry. It’s a long lens. I wasn’t as close as it might seem. Also, if it gives you any comfort, I carry a snake kit in my backpack.”

Disbelief rolled through Jack. That sounded like a line of bull to him. He stared hard. He’d better make sure they had a fresh supply of the kits just in case. It’d been a while since he’d seen a rattlesnake around.

“Remember?” Caroline prompted. “I’m a biologist. I’ve taught college-level biology and ecology for twenty-five years. Technically, I’m ‘Dr.’ Tate.”

She added a saucy smile that crinkled around her warm eyes.

Caught off guard, Jack cleared his throat. “No, I don’t think you mentioned that.” The information explained the hint of arrogance in her attitude. Well, fine. No need for him to worry about her then. “Very good. I should let you get back to your picture taking.”

He put his left foot into the stirrup and swung his right leg over Charlie’s back.

“Hey, Jack.”

He would’ve moved along had she not called to him. Instead, he turned back. She didn’t seem to have any trouble with his first name. In fact, it rolled from her lips as if they were old friends. He squirmed in the saddle. “Yes?”

She dusted her hands against her jeans before meeting his eyes. “I understand you’re all alone in the big house. Would you have dinner with me tonight? I’d love to learn more about the ranch.”

A hot flush crept to Jack’s collar. She had to be kidding. Who had she been talking to? And why would he want to have dinner with her? Sweat rolled down the back of his neck. Because he could use the company? And she was an attractive, interesting woman?

She glanced at her watch. “I’m ready to wrap up here. It’s been a full day, for sure. Want to say around six-thirty?”

He hadn’t said yes.
