Death's Favor - Jill Ramsower

 Danika

I ran from my Russian father to escape an arranged marriage

and ended up handcuffed to an Italian mafia hitman … in his bed.

He’s as intensely beautiful as he is ruthless.
A dichotomy of callous yet kind that fascinates me, though I know it shouldn’t.
The man’s a killer.

But more than that, he suffers from compulsions—a need to control every aspect of his life.
And now that I’ve entered his world, I’ve become his ultimate fixation.

My Review

Death's Favor (The Moretti Men, #2)Death's Favor by Jill Ramsower
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I can't actually remember how many of Jill Ramsower's books I've read now. I think that there may be one I've missed (but I will be going back to) but I've read all of the others and they just get better and better.
Tommy is an unusual hero. Yes, he's strong, good-looking and loves fiercely, but there's more to him than this. Tommy doesn't fit easily into the world. He likes order and struggles when things change or don't behave as they should. He's neurodivergent (although undiagnosed and it's never explicitly said what he 'has'). He's also a hit man. As I say, not your obvious romantic hero. But that doesn't matter. Once he meets Danika, she becomes his everything and the feeling is returned.
I loved these two as a couple. they worked so well together, even if it took a little time for them to figure that out for themselves.
This was a great read and I loved every second of it. My only regret is reading it far to fast and now it's over. Please pick up a copy, you won't regret it.

Dark Hearts Aflame - Amber Daulton

A drug lord on the run. A cartel princess in hiding. All it takes is a spark to set their world ablaze.

Bristol Rieger, better known as Thorn, left his criminal life behind for a fresh start in Mexico. Flying under the radar of the government and the cartels alike, his best-laid plans go awry when a woman from his narco days discovers his whereabouts. Carmen Lozano, however, is no longer the innocent girl he remembers.

Carmen escaped the chains of her tiara and her abusive marriage to join a group of resistance fighters. The last thing she expected was the now-retired capo setting out to seduce her with his wicked touch. Embracing the blood on his hands is easy, but his secrets wear on her patience.

When their enemies close in, Bristol will have to summon his inner monster to protect her. But can that monster be tamed again?

– Book one in the dark romantic suspense series, the Lozano Cartel. All the books can be read as a standalone, but are part of an interconnected series.

– Scenes featuring torture/violence, kidnapping, attempted assault, drug use, and suicide (discussed) may be uncomfortable for some readers.

– No cheating and HEA guaranteed!
Dark Hearts Aflame (Lozano Cartel Book 1): A Dark Redemption Cartel/Mafia RomanceDark Hearts Aflame (Lozano Cartel Book 1): A Dark Redemption Cartel/Mafia Romance by Amber Daulton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Dark Hearts Aflame follows the story of Carmen and Bristol. Carmen is in hiding from her husband and family. She meets Bristol by accident, who is also on the run from his criminal past. They were both very attracted to one another when they were younger and now, meeting again, it's impossible to deny their attraction.
Unlike many characters in similar books, Carmen is a strong woman who isn't afraid to get what she wants and from who she wants. I'm a bit sick of these virginal, quiet types, so this certainly made a welcome change. Bristol is a good match for her and I thought that they worked really well together.
It did amuse me that to hide his identity, Bristol changed his second name, but stuck with Bristol. I don't think I've ever heard anyone with that as their name before. But perhaps that's simply because I'm in the UK and naming people after British cities is something we don't really do.
This was a gripping and satisfying read and I'd recommend.

Devil's Thirst - Jill Ramsower

A new neighbor with a secret identity and a deadly obsession…

Amelie
I knew I shouldn't have asked him for a ride.

My new neighbor is a study in contradictions—covered in tattoos and dripping intensity.
He’s alluring yet aloof, and his every calculated move is dangerously seductive.

Little did I know, he’s been systematically inserting himself into every part of my life.
Creeping beneath my protective armor.
Trapping me like a fly in his web before revealing his true identity.

Now, he’s standing before our families calling me his future wife.

He doesn’t understand that my life isn’t that simple.
I have secrets of my own, and his obsession with claiming me might just get me killed.

What to know about Devil’s Thirst:
-Alpha anti-hero
-Ballerina good girl
-Obsessed stalker
-Tragic past
-My wife
-Spicy slow burn
-Has an HEA
-Can be read as a standalone
-Dual POV
-Content warnings— Devil's Thirst contains references to past S/A (not between the main couple) and might not be suitable for readers sensitive to the subject. For a more detailed list of possible content triggers, you can visit the books tab on my website.

For those of you who are new to me, I write what I'd call "mafia lite." My heroes are hardened criminals with soft spots for their heroines. There may be violence and cruelty in my books, but never between the main characters. Enjoy!

My Review

Devil's Thirst (Moretti Men, #1)Devil's Thirst by Jill Ramsower
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It's been a while since I've read a Jill Ramsower book (I think I've actually missed one in her last series, that I'll have to go back to). A new one is always something to look forward to though and I was keen to get into Devil's Thirst. Once I started it, I was reluctant to put it down and found that I got through it far too quickly. That's the problem with good books, you don't want to stop reading and then feel sad that you've finished.
Devil's Thirst is the start of a new series, Moretti Men. It does link to her previous mafia series and feature characters from them. In fact we've met our heroine before. Amelie has had a tough time, being lost by her sister and suffering amnesia she now keeps to herself and concentrates on her dancing. Sante has been obsessed by her since they briefly met some years ago. While he thinks that she's an itch he can scratch and move on, it soon becomes clear that this obsession is much more and there's no leaving her once they've reconnected.
This is one of these books where if it were real live I'd be suggesting that she turns and runs a long way from him. He's obsessive and waving so many red flags that it's just about the only colour anyone can see. For this book and for Amelie though, it works. They make a great couple that connects as though they were made for one another (which I suppose they were really).
Devil's Thrist is a fantastic start to a new series and will also be loved by anyone who enjoyed the The Five Families or The Byrne Brothers' series'.

My Review

I've loved all of Jill Ramsower's Mafia books and Vicious Seduction is no exception. Featuring Byrne family member Orin who becomes entangled with Lina, a woman with secrets, but who he just can't seem to stay away from.
Orina and Lina are so well-suited. Lina is a feisty woman who is prepared to do anything to protect those who she loves. Orin wants to avenge his father and although he has plans to do this, once he meets Lina, then all that comes into question.
I really enjoyed this story and watching these two find their way to one another. There wasn't the big misunderstanding that you sometimes get in books like this and I enjoyed that aspect of it as well.
This was a great read and one I would highly recommend.

I was too pissed to play Prince Charming. Fuck that. I’d sooner throw her over my shoulder and lock her away than let that geriatric bastard see her in what should have been meant for me.

Jesus, I didn’t know where these thoughts were coming from.

I was out of control and couldn’t find it in me to care.

She started to answer, and I could tell by the fire in her eyes that I wouldn’t like what she was going to say. I cut her off before she got the chance to say a word. Clutching her wrist, I hauled her around to the alley on the side of the building. It wasn’t particularly private, but it was better than having it out with her on the goddamn sidewalk.

“Is Wellington taking you to the club for dinner tonight?” Just saying the words made my jaw ache with strain.

“Yes.” Defiance. So much bloody defiance.

“You don’t want to be with him, I know it. You came to Bastion for a reason. I didn’t make you—you came on your own. So why the fuck are you still going to see him?”

“I told you, it’s complicated.”

“Nothing’s that fucking complicated.”

“Maybe for you,” she shot back angrily.

My mind raced as I stared her down. I needed to handle this carefully, but my frustration tinged my vision with red, making it hard to see anything but my need to gain her submission.

The lighter was in my hand before I knew it, and I flicked it open.

“Can you swear on your life he’ll never see it?”

“You wouldn’t.” She gaped at me.

“Baby, you have no idea the lengths I’d go to.”

She crossed her arms over her chest and narrowed angry blue eyes at me. “Fine, I swear no other man will see the lingerie.”

My smile was slow and lupine as it crept across my face.

“Wrong answer.”

She could try to sass me, but it wouldn’t get her far. The small flame barely kissed the thin black tissue before the hungry flame devoured the paper.

Lina’s jaw plummeted, her eyes going wide with horror. And was that … a touch of … sorrow mixed in?

Shit, I didn’t want to hurt her. I’d been trying to prevent that. Being near Wellington, clothed or not, was dangerous for her in so many ways.

I tossed the smoking bag away from us and caged her in against the stone wall, forcing her watery gaze to mine. “Look at me, Lina.”

Questions and uncertainty spun in her eyes like little blue whirlpools of chaos. “Why, Oran? Why are you doing this?”

Only an inch separated us, and my body screamed with the need to close the gap, so much so that my breath grew choppy and shallow.

“Because you need me to. You need my help, whether you want it or not.”

It should have been a lie—a line I fed to her to win her over—but instead, it rang with sincerity even to my own ears. Where she was concerned, my actions were no longer purely motivated by revenge. I didn’t know what that meant for me and didn’t want to think about it.

I lowered my face to hers, drawn by an invisible force impossible to ignore. My lips ghosted over her skin—her temple, her cheeks, her lips. I never touched her, though. I made sure of that. My body vibrated inside with restraint, but I kept control of myself.

Lina trembled beneath me.

Her lips parted a fraction, and I felt her warmth as her chest lifted and strained closer to mine. We lingered in a timeless moment of suspense, all the while the whisper of my words from the club echoing in the air around us.

Kiss me.

Kiss me.

Kiss me.

Like a needle to a balloon, chaos exploded when Lina launched herself at me, her lips colliding with mine and arms tugging me close.

Thank Christ.

I responded with equal abandon. Pulling her luscious body against mine and devouring her kiss. The sweep of her tongue along mine turned my cock to solid stone. It pressed so hard against my zipper I worried it would leave a permanent mark. My physical reaction to her was undeniable. What amazed me even more was my emotional response. The second her body melted into mine, I went feral with the need to own her. To possess her so thoroughly she forgot any other man had ever existed.

Her submission to the desire pulsing between us was a sign that I was making progress.

It made me ravenous for more.

The small glimpse of what it would be like to have her for myself had my world tilting on its axis. The breathless moan that snuck past her lips. The tug of her fingers in my hair. The nip of her teeth on my bottom lip.

How could kissing anyone else ever compare to this?

It was impossible.

She’d decimated my prior standards and permanently altered my perceptions. She’d marked me in a way that couldn’t be seen, but I knew it was there, and I’d be damned if I didn’t find a way to return the favor.

I hated how much I wanted her.

Jill is a Texan, born and raised. She manages the hectic social calendars for her three active children and occasionally spends an evening with her dashing husband. Aside from being an author and a mom, she's a travel junkie and loves to read when she is not lost in her own stories.

With Jill’s books, you can count on confident heroines, plenty of steamy tension, and deliciously assertive leading men. There are no guarantees in life, but with her books, you know everything will work out in the end. However, a perfect ending would not be nearly as satisfying without a seemingly insurmountable challenge. Jill loves to add plenty of adversity in her stories, creating unforgettably dynamic characters and sneaky plot twists you will never see coming.

Corrupted Union - Jill Ramsower

My Review

I probably should start this by admitting that I read it in a day. Not because it was too short or too light or anything like that, but simply because once I started I didn't want to put it down.
It will probably come as no surprise then that I loved this romance between Rowan and Keir, they seemed so well suited and the way that they were able to open up and be with each other worked so well. It was easy to see that they should be together.
Having said that, there was one aspect of their romance that I wasn't on board with, or rather the way that he dealt with it. I think I would have preferred if that had been done slightly differently, but overall I still really enjoyed the book and finding out about these characters. Particularly the hidden pain and past that Rowen was dealing with.
There is a character in this book called Stetson. I don't think I've ever come across a name like that before, but surely it's verging on child abuse and who knows what someone saddled with that name would end up like!
This was another great read from Jill Ramsower and one I really enjoyed, I can't wait for the next.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and given voluntarily.

“I don’t want you over there until we sort this out.”

“Having someone inside that house is the best possible source of information. And besides, Stetson is my boyfriend.” Didn’t he see the obvious flaws in his plan? I was in an ideal situation to gather intel. Stetson likely wouldn’t notice if I made excuses to stay away, but I didn’t tell that to Keir. I was the one who heard the girl cry. I felt responsible for her, and I didn’t want to wipe my hands of her without ensuring something was being done.

Something about what I’d said struck a nerve. Keir’s vibrant blue eyes darkened until they were as fathomless as the deepest parts of the ocean. He walked me backward, trapping me between his enormous body and the wall, his face suddenly inches from mine.

“Why do you even care about any of this? You could go about your life with no skin off your back.”

I prickled at the insinuation. “I’m just a shallow sorority girl, so you’d think that’s what I’d do. Maybe I’m looking for bonus points when I apply for my membership with the Colony Club. Oh, I know! Maybe I’m doing it out of a sense of obligation derived from my obvious superiority.” Was that what he wanted to hear? That my station in life made me incapable of any depth or compassion?

“Don’t put words in my fucking mouth,” he growled.

“I didn’t have to. You might as well have put them on a billboard.”

I couldn’t breathe. He was too much. Too disorienting.

His body blocked my escape, the same way his overwhelming presence eclipsed all thought of anything else. All I could see or feel or think of was Keir.

Then his lips were on mine, his hands gripping me tightly to him. I met his kiss with an intensity that rivaled his own. We were two magnets unable to resist one another.

The sensual press of his lips, the tug of his fingers in my hair, the delicious taste of his tongue against mine—the simple act erased my identity until I was no longer Rowan. I was whoever he wanted me to be. I was free.

His hands began to roam my body, but only for a second. Not nearly long enough. He stiffened and pulled back as though only then realizing what he’d done. A heavy veil descended behind his eyes, cutting off any chance of me understanding where his thoughts had taken him.

I didn’t know what to say or do.

“Looks like staying away from the boyfriend won’t be such an imposition.” His well-placed jab deflated the balloon he’d only just filled in my chest.
